Welcome to our weekly newsletter update!Below you will find five sections (math updates, reading/writing updates, science/social studies updates, friendly reminders, and upcoming dates). If you have any questions or concerns, please send us an email.
Math Updates Thank you to all the families who donated dry erase markers! We are now fully stocked and students are no longer frustrated with markers that are dry. This week in math we completed NWEA testing. We also did many YouCubed Tasks/Activities that gave students the chance to work in collaborative pairs and explore various number sense ideas. Next week, we will begin multiplying decimals. Looking forward to starting this work before winter break and continuing it after break as well. Please work on ST Math and Khan Academy over Winter Break! Reading/Writing Updates This week in reading and writing, much of our time was dedicated to NWEA testing. Students also had the opportunity to explore the plot of Tuck Everlasting through the creation of a storyboard--a graphic depiction of the plot of the story so far-- and do some creative writing related to the novel. Next week we will launch a new unit in writing on creating engaging personal narratives. We will also continue to explore the elements of fiction in novels both as a class and independently. Finally, students will receive a new set of word study words that they will study over the course of the week. Science/Social Studies Updates Science Class: Our primary focus this week was science since testing took up much of our time. For the past couple of weeks students have been learning to differentiate and explain the relationship between atoms, molecules, and elements. They built models of molecules, studied the periodic table of elements, and drew Bohr models of atoms using the information from the table of elements. See the pictures on my website at http://peirceroom324.weebly.com Students explored the differences between mixtures and solutions and learned how to identify when a mixture is a solution. They tested 9 solutions such as coffee, cocoa, salt water, iron filings with salt and then justified procedures on how to separate them. Learning that a mixture combines two or ore materials that retain their own properties was key to this understanding. We touched upon solvents and solutes but we will continue this study into next week to understand that a solution forms when a material dissolves in liquid (solvent) and cannot be retrieved with a filter. We also touched upon using evaporation to separate solutions and will continue that study into next week. Friendly Reminders
