Thank you to all of you for the holiday gifts to each of us! On behalf of all of us we would like to wish everyone and their families the very best this holiday season, and with deep gratitude we say thank you for the warmth and support you have provided us with since the beginning of the school year. We could not have asked for more! Looking forward to finishing out a strong year in fifth grade with all of you and your children! Math Updates This week in math we finished our division of whole numbers unit. Students are now dividing three digit by two digit whole numbers with and without remainders. Students got practice with picking a strategy (partial quotients, area model, or the standard division algorithm), estimating their quotient before solving, and using the properties of division to simplify problems to make them easier to solve. Today students took a division end of unit summative assessment which will be returned to them upon return from winter break. Those grades have already been entered into Aspen if you are interested in how your child did. Over the break, please work on your child’s NWEA Khan Academy practice and ST Math as often as possible. This is not a requirement, but a strong suggestion. In addition, please work on multiplication flashcards or multiplication games to keep their math fluency strong! Science Updates This week in science students finished their NASA research project with their inquiry group. They finished researching their question(s) and finished a Google Slides presentation. This presentation will be shared with the fourth graders upon our return from winter break. Students are very excited to share their learning with their younger peers when we return and we will work on what goes in to a presentation for others. Reading/Writing/Social Studies Updates This week in Reading and Social Studies we finished our unit on Kids On Strike. Previously students were placed into groups of three and were assigned a new chapter from the book. This week students had time to take the information they had gathered from their chapter and turn it into a Google Slides presentation. In Writing, students reviewed the writing strategies which they will incorporate into their persuasive writing piece upon returning from break. They also took a quiz to assess their level of knowledge on these skills. The week was capped off with fun educational activities and festivities. Friendly Reminders

Math Updates This week, we continued our unit on whole number by division by dividing three digit by two digit numbers using the area model and partial quotients (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIjIcFyRSjY) strategies. We also looked at how to use rounding and estimating to get a starting place for division strategies. We also started to explore some of the properties of division. We will continue whole number division practice and the properties of division next week. Science Updates In Science, we have continued to work on research for the NASA inquiry projects by learning to search for sources, summarize information, and collaborate with their groups. Students continue to be very curious and excited about their topics! Reading/Writing Updates In Writing we worked on building foundational skills for a persuasive writing piece. Students learned about the use of rhetorical questions, hyperbole and emotive language and the manner in which these writing techniques can be utilized to strengthen their arguments. We also discussed the use of factual/statistical information to support our reasoning, along with the use of “expert quotations”. We read several persuasive pieces and discussed the various elements used by the author in each piece to try and persuade their readers of their arguments. In Reading we split up into groups of three to start working on a project that will be presented to classmates and teachers next week before break. Students were assigned a specific chapter from “Kids on Strike” and were asked to read through it and gather the most important information (setting, characters, problem/solution, key facts, etc.) as well as summarize the chapter. Next week students will be putting this information in the form of a Google Slides presentation and will share their content with the rest of the class. Social Studies Updates In Social Studies we continued reading the “Through My Eyes” book by Ruby Bridges. Students have been discussing the various topics covered in the book, including racial segregation and the various prominent figures (governors, judges, etc) involved in the historical case. Specifically, students focused on Ruby’s experience during her first days of class in an integrated school. Friendly Reminders
