Math Updates Thank you so much to everyone who came to report card pick-up this week. It was wonderful to engage in so many productive and reflective conversations about how students can continue to push themselves to greatness. This week in math students prepared for their student led conferences. We also set goals for quarter 2 based on the conversations from report card pick-up and from our report cards. We also continued our decimal numbers unit with the addition of decimal numbers to the hundredths place. We looked at visual strategies of adding with base-ten blocks and using a regrouping place value chart. We also looked at adding by lining up the numbers and their place values, just like we do with whole numbers in the standard algorithm. We also looked at how to add decimal numbers that do not have the same amount of place values given (for example, 3.5 + 0.875) by adding zeros as place holders Science Updates In Science this week, we did an experiment about the phases of the moon. Students used flashlights to simulate sunlight as the moon revolves around the Earth. We learned the names of the different phases, as well. We closed the week learning about the constellations, and deepened our understanding of stars. Ask your student about why we only see constellations during certain seasons! Reading/Writing/Social Studies Updates In Reading and Social Studies we wrapped up our second unit on informational texts and text features by discussing some of the more complex types of text features. In particular we learned how to read information from different types of graphs and discussed how they helped to summarize/reflect the information in the text. Students were also introduced to the next topic of discussion which will be covered in Unit 3: the history of children partaking in labor movements. The title of the text we will be using is Kids on Strike by Susan Campbell Bartoletti. In writing we analyzed pieces of fictional stories and discussed story and character development in preparation for our next writing piece. Friendly Reminders
