Welcome to our weekly newsletter update! You can find this on the Peirce website as well: https://peirce5thgrade.weebly.com/. Below you will find five sections (math updates, reading/writing updates, science/social studies updates, friendly reminders, and upcoming dates). If you have any questions or concerns, please send us an email.
Math Updates This week we wrapped up our work with whole number and decimal place value. This is a concept we will circle back to throughout the remainder of the year. If you are interested in reviewing with your student, we discussed the following concepts:
In addition, all students have been given an ST Math account that they are working on in class once they finish their independent work. Students have also been granted access to work on ST Math zat home if they desire. Finally, please check-in with your student about the quality of the work they are producing in class. Many students are not completing all of their classwork or using their class time well. This will show in their understanding of material and in their grades. If you are curious and would like to take a look at their Bansho notebook (math journal), please stop by at Curriculum Night on the 27th. Reading/Writing Updates We finished our unit on the reading community this week. As a class we read Everybody Brings Noodles (Dooley). We used it and Something to Remember Me By to analyze the point of view in each story and evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of stories told through either first-person or third-person point of view. Scholars continued to build stamina in their daily independent reading, log the books they complete in their reading journals, and practice self-monitoring while they read. We will be beginning a unit that focuses on nonfiction text features next week. In writing we continued to work on the first two parts of the writing process: generating ideas and drafting. We read Patricia Polacco’s My Rotten Readheaded Older Brother and Meteor! to help inspire ideas from our own lives. Scholar’s also learned a pre-writing technique in which they can use a “favorite sentence” from a previous piece to begin a new piece. Finally, we considered how retelling a story from a different perspective is an excellent way to create something new. Next week will be our final week of generating ideas and drafting for our current unit. We will shift our focus to getting ideas and drafting nonfiction writing.
