Math Updates
This week we reviewed lots of material and continued new learning. We reviewed many geometric vocabulary words and terms, worked to classify quadrilaterals into categories and subcategories, learned how to analyze line plots, reviewed and practiced the order of operations, and learned how to estimate distance. While we looked at multiple topics throughout the week, students have tons of knowledge they were able to pull from and bring to the classroom. We also enjoyed playing Kahoot! today to review material we have learned this year. We take NWEA next week. Students should use their Khan Academy NWEA practice to prepare. If you would like specific practice or your child thinks they want to practice a particular topic, please reach out to me. Please speak with your child about taking their time while they test and using this opportunity to show all that they’ve learned this year in math! Looking forward to reflecting on the process with students after testing. Reading/Writing Updates This week in reading we finished up our unit on determining important ideas and the details that support them. Students read a biography of Malala Yousafzai and another of President Obama. They worked to identify the important ideas and details, then summarize the text. They also thought about how to characterize each person and provide text evidence to support that analysis. In writing we continued to explore and draft poetry. We read the poems “Child Frightened by a Thunderstorm” (Kooser), “flamingo” and “firework” (Worth), “Windshield Wiper” (Merriam), and “Gentle Sound of Rain” (Emmett). We discussed how poets create sound in their writing through the use of onomatopoeia, repetition, and alliteration. We discussed how the form of the poem can be intentionally chosen and add meaning to the poem. Next week we will continue to explore and draft poems when we aren’t testing. Students will select one poem to develop into a final draft and we will begin the culminating project. As you know, we take the NWEA next week. Students can bring home their affixes and roots index cards to study at home. They can also try out a few practice questions on PrepDog (link below). I would also recommend talking through strategies to manage stress while testing and daily. If you need ideas please reach out. Science/Social Studies Updates Friendly Reminders
