Welcome to our weekly newsletter update!Below you will find five sections (math updates, reading/writing updates, science/social studies updates, friendly reminders, and upcoming dates). If you have any questions or concerns, please send us an email.
Math Updates This week in math we worked on addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators (For example: 3/4 + 2/3, 2/3 - 2/5 + 1/10, 4 ⅓ - 4/5, 9/10 + 4 3/5). We looked at many different strategies for both addition and subtraction. We worked on finding equivalent fractions, changing improper fractions into mixed numbers, and mixed numbers into improper fractions. Many students have felt extremely confident and successful in their work! Students are starting to ask great questions of their peers which has helped them to stay engaged, give themselves and others clarification on the material we are working on, and helps to gain a stronger understanding. This has been a remarkable change for many students this week! Please continue to encourage your child to stay engaged and ask clarifying questions. We have about one month before NWEA testing begins. Students have all been given practice on Khan Academy linked to their NWEA Rit band. Students have been working on this all year long, though some students have not been diligent in completing this work. Please touch base with your child about how they are doing on their NWEA Khan practice. Some students have taken it upon themselves to begin daily Khan practice at home. I highly encourage this for the remainder of the year. As always, please reach out with questions, concerns, or feedback! Have a wonderful weekend. Reading/Writing Updates This week in reading we continued to explore the various ways in which expository texts are organized. We took a second look at articles that only give evidence for the opinion of the author. We also began to analyze and problem solve with functional texts. A functional text helps people learn how to do things, get from one place to another, and complete everyday tasks. Students learned how they can use two or more functional texts to solve problems. Many students also used a functional text to teach themselves how to make origami cups. In writing, students worked to complete their expository report drafts. Students shared a small portion of their work with one another to cultivate curiosity. We also discussed how to thoughtfully plan the type and placement of text features in their reports. Many students finished typing up their research, planned the placement of text features and began to design the features they wanted to include. Science/Social Studies Updates Science: class was very interesting this week. The students solved the case of the stolen candy from Ms. Mosby’s desk. The students listened to the motives and alibis from four suspects. They took fingerprints, made and examined dental impressions, studied ink through a chromatography test, and pulled DNA strands. After all of this investigation the students found out who stole the chocolate from the teachers’ desk. Social Studies: Students have continued to work on their cultural autobiography presentation which is due on Tuesday, April 30th. Students also met with their mentors this week to work on their exhibition project. Room 324 students enjoyed some planting time on Thursday afternoon in the Peirce vegetable garden.
