Welcome to our weekly newsletter update!Below you will find five sections (math updates, reading/writing updates, science/social studies updates, friendly reminders, and upcoming dates). If you have any questions or concerns, please send us an email.
Math Updates This week in math we wrapped up our decimal division unit. On Monday we looked at problems where we have a divisor that is less than 1 whole (for example 300 ÷ 0.8) and realized that the quotient becomes larger than the dividend. We also took our decimal division summative assessment that will be returned to students on Monday. This assessment was an open notebook test and many students realized that their notebook was not organized or neat enough to be used as a reference tool. Today we discussed beginning our new unit in a more productive and intentional way by staying organized. Today we started our first unit of fractions. We are beginning with inquiry by asking as many questions as we can. We worked to uncover the answers as our unit progresses. The first unit helps students to make sense of what fractions are and opened by connecting division and fractions (for example, I can write 2 ÷ 3 as the fraction 2/3). Reading/Writing Updates We began a new unit in reading in which we will analyze the various text structures you can find in expository nonfiction. The first text type we explored was articles. We read “Copy Cats” as a class. We discovered that author’s can inform their readers in a balanced way by structuring their writing into a pros/cons format. We continued our unit on expository writing by learning more about researching and notetaking. The students learned how to cite the important information from books and websites and to condense their learning from the site/book into a brief note. Students spent time independently researching their topic, using the new citation and notetaking method. All classrooms were able to visit the Buy One Get One book fair on Thursday. Thank you to the Merrill, Frank, and Eshu Families for their donations! Science/Social Studies Updates Social Studies: As many of you know our final debate was held on Tuesday of this week in the library. The students were extremely impressive. They presented their arguments, cited sources, and reasoned through their arguments. It was the closest debate that we have ever had in the 5th grade. The affirmative team won by 1 point! I would like to send a HUGE shout out to Mr. Desanto, one of our 5th graders parents, who so graciously agreed to be the judge. Thank you Mr. DeSanto.
