Welcome to our weekly newsletter update!Below you will find five sections (math updates, reading/writing updates, science/social studies updates, friendly reminders, and upcoming dates). If you have any questions or concerns, please send us an email. Math Updates This week in math we continued our division of whole numbers unit. We worked on dividing two digit by two digit numbers and three digit by two digit numbers. We learned a lot about what a remainder means and how to check our work with and without remainders. We had several math talks about how to estimate a quotient (answer to a division problem) when dividing. We’ve worked on many strategies and most students are comfortable with either the partial quotients strategy or the traditional division algorithm. Please check-in with your student and find out what they are most comfortable with. Students can use either strategy right now, but the goal is for them to learn and master the traditional division algorithm by the end of the year. If you are not sure about what these strategies (click on the link above for a video on partial quotients) are and/or would like a refresher from me so you are able to help at home, please send me an email. Students did not have a Khan Academy assignment this week on division. Look for one next week! Many students have not been working through their NWEA assigned work on Khan Academy. Please touch base with your child about how this is going. Reading/Writing Updates This week in reading we continued our work on making inferences by reading poetry. We used both inferences and visualization as strategies to comprehend the poems we read. We read poets such as Gary Soto and Valerie Worth. Students learned how to complete a double-entry journal to record text evidence for inferences they made about poetry and their own independent reading. Next week we will continue to work on making inferences with a focus on historical fiction and cause/effect in literature. This week in writing students spent time typing their final drafts of their personal narratives. Students took a quiz to demonstrate their understanding of the genre and the grammar concepts we studied during the unit. All of the quizzes have been graded and final scores can be viewed on Google Classroom. Writers also showed interest and appreciation for each other’s work as the whole class participated in author’s chair. Next week we will launch a new unit on expository writing. Science/Social Studies Updates Science: Students have started the study of animal migrations. We will be studying the various reasons that animals migrate. Our focus will be on sockeye salmon, Monarch butterflies, wildebeest, sperm whale, and red crabs. This study will help students analyze the spatial organization of people, places, and environments on Earth's surface. Social Studies: Mr. Lynn from Argument Centered Learning visited with the 5th graders on Wednesday. This week students have finalized their two pieces of evidence with reasoning to support their claim in the Immigration debate. Students have started working on counter-arguments. Boone School visit: Refugee and immigrant children from Boone school visited our classrooms today. This provided an excellent opportunity for the Peirce students to listen to the life stories of how and why they immigrated to the United States. Friendly Reminders
