Welcome to our weekly newsletter update!Below you will find five sections (math updates, reading/writing updates, science/social studies updates, friendly reminders, and upcoming dates). If you have any questions or concerns, please send us an email.
Our apologies for not sending a newsletter last Friday. Mrs. Berenson and Leventis were both out sick on Friday with the flu. We are back in action this week! See below for weekly learning updates! Math Updates This week in math we continued our decimal multiplication unit, completed AIMSWEB testing, and learned a new fluency routine. On Tuesday students took their AIMSWEB benchmark assessment to measure their math progress this year. Those results will be sent home soon. On Wednesday, students were introduced to a new fluency routine. A few times a week, students will now be given 15 minutes of independent fluency time to self-select an area learned earlier this year that still feels challenging. Students are tracking their progress on a fluency tracker and hope to get 85% accuracy before moving to the next topic. I hope this continued practice will give student the practice they need and confidence. In our multiplying decimals unit we worked on thinking about what happens to our product when multiplying with a number smaller than 1 (for example 0.8). We also looked at applying our knowledge of area and volume to figures with decimal side lengths. Students are not given weekly Khan Academy assignments through Google Classroom. Those assignments are connected to the work we are currently engaged with in the classroom. Students are given ample time to complete these assignments in class, but can also complete them at home if needed. ST Math can also be completed at home, though is not required homework. Next week, we will wrap up our decimal multiplication unit and take our end of unit summative assessment on Thursday. Reading/Writing Updates This week was a short but busy one in reading. Last week we finished reading Tuck Everlasting and thought about character change and revisited the theme of the book. This week students applied their knowledge of the elements of fiction to their own independent books and wrote journal entries specifically about the themes they have noticed in their books. We also took the end of book test for Tuck Everlasting. Initial scores of the test can be viewed on Google classroom and final grades for the test will be posted over the weekend. All students took the AIMSWEB benchmark for reading as well. I’m really happy to report that almost every student showed improvements from their fall score. This week in writing we continued to revise the personal narrative drafts that the kids have been working on. We critically reread the drafts for places to include thoughts, feelings, and lessons learned. We also analyzed the opening sentences of the drafts and revised them to really grab the attention of readers. Science/Social Studies Updates Science: We are continuing our Owl Pellet/Skeleton study. Students have started to build the skeleton of the mammal that was found in their pellet. Students will compare these small mammal skeletons to their own skeletal system. You can see pictures of the process at my website under photos: http://peirceroom324.weebly.com/photos.html Social Science: Students have selected their sub category for the debate which will take place on March 21st in the library. They have also selected whether they are on the affirmative or negative side of the debate. The sub categories are as follows: 1. High Skilled Workers; 2. Refugees; 3. Social Division and Diversity; 4. Terrorism; 5. Wages and Unemployment; 6. Undocumented Immigrants. The students have been given their claim and they have started to collect evidence to support their claim. Friendly Reminders
