Welcome to our weekly newsletter update! Below you will find five sections (math updates, reading/writing updates, science/social studies updates, friendly reminders, and upcoming dates). If you have any questions or concerns, please send us an email.
Math Updates It was wonderful to meet with so many of you on conference day this week! Thank you for touching base if you stopped in. If you did not and still have questions for me, please send me an email as needed. This week in math we prepared for student led conferences and practiced comparing decimals to the thousandths place. We worked on three strategies for comparing decimals: using a number line, lining up place values, and “unitizing” across place values using the smallest unit. Many students also got the chance to spend time on ST Math and Khan Academy. Many students are showings lots of growth and progress on both programs. Please continue to utilize both of these programs at home as you see fit. In addition, please remind your student to bring their journal home on Thursdays if you discussed that on conference day. They must return their journal on Fridays. As always, please email me with questions or concerns! Reading/Writing Updates This week in reading we continued to practice using the learning tool “Stop and Ask Questions”. We also practiced using questions and text evidence gained from reading with a question in mind to help prepare for meaningful discussions about the text. We will wrap up this unit on questioning on Monday. In writing we progressed from the “getting ideas” phase of the writing process for persuasive essays to finalizing first drafts and making revisions. We analyzed the opening paragraphs of mentor essays in order to help us make our own opening paragraphs attention grabbing and interesting. For word study, students received a new set of words. They worked through the first three activities on their word study schedule. They will not get new words this coming week. They will continue to work with their current words and be assessed on mastery of the meaning/sound/pattern on Tuesday. Finally, thank you to everyone for the great conversations and questions on conference day. Science/Social Studies Updates Science: This week we continued our study of density and took our first test for this unit which covered matter and density. We also had a visitor from Urban Tree House in our science class to teach us about the Chicago River. We simulated river pollution through story telling and learned that people are to blame for the pollution of the river. We also discussed the reversal of the river's flow. See pictures at my website: http://peirceroom324.weebly.com/ Social Studies: We are finalizing our work on the book Kids on Strike and should have our strike signs and presentations ready next week. Students will participate in a jig-saw presentation where they will explain their claims with evidence, reasoning and refutation to other students. Friendly Reminders
