Math Updates This week in math all students were given a Khan Academy account. We are using Khan Academy in three different ways: 1) to get further practice with 5th grade math curriculum, 2) to search specific topics we are working on in class to get further practice, and 3) to give students targeted practice based on their NWEA scores. Khan Academy and ST Math are both great resources to get extra math in at home, though are not required homework. This week we also finished our volume unit. Students took their end of unit assessment on Wednesday and that will be returned next week. We started our new math unit on decimal numbers. We began with a concrete understanding of what decimals are by thinking about liters. We had extensive conversations about how decimals are numbers between numbers (both between whole numbers and between other decimals). We learned how to express numbers that are between two 1/10 units and how to read and write decimal numbers to the hundredths. On Friday we were given the chance to work on coding and build educational legos in the computer lab with Ms. Andrade! Next week we will continue with decimal numbers. Reading/Writing Updates This week in reading students read several expository texts to gain background knowledge about the current PYP unit of study “Sharing the Planet”. This included several articles about the rights of children, how children are advocating for themselves in the faces of challenges, and an expository book about big cats and their endangerment. These texts related the the unit’s lines of inquiry around ways in which individuals and organizations work to protect those at risk and how children respond to challenges, risks, opportunities. We also launched a new unit of study in which we will focus on curiosity and questioning as a comprehension strategy for reading expository nonfiction. In writing we spent time sharing and reflecting on our work as writers. Many more students participated in the “author’s chair” Q&A sessions. The kids also had the opportunity to reflect on their work during the unit by completing a self-assessment.
