Welcome to our weekly newsletter update!Below you will find five sections (math updates, reading/writing updates, science/social studies updates, friendly reminders, and upcoming dates). If you have any questions or concerns, please send us an email.
Math Updates This week in math we finished our decimal numbers unit by learning how to add and subtract decimal numbers. We learned that adding and subtracting decimal numbers is just like adding and subtracting whole numbers. We also looked at “special cases” with both addition and subtraction where we must regroup/borrow and where the number of place values is not the same. Students learned that a zero can act as a placeholder. We spent today reviewing everything learned during our decimal unit as students will take their end of unit summative assessment on Monday. Some students took their Bansho notebook home to look over this weekend. If they took it home, please ensure it is returned on Monday. Khan Academy will be a great resource to review this weekend if need be as well. Reading/Writing Updates This week in reading we continued to read and explore the elements of fiction in Tuck Everlasting. We considered how the author of a text uses the setting to convey meaning and the feeling of a scene. We also began to discuss character change and the role conflict plays in transforming a character. In writing we started the process of proofreading our persuasive essays. We proofread for incomplete sentences and places to add in commas after introductory words, phrases, or clauses. Students also used their proofreading notes (from the previous unit) to ensure their writing was free of spelling, punctuation, and capitalization errors. After finishing these corrections, students typed their final versions. We participated in author’s chair and focused on how to show interest in and respectfully disagree with others’ opinions. If students did not turn their essay in by today, they have the option of finishing it at home, during recess or after school on Monday or Tuesday.
