3. Welcome to our weekly newsletter update!Below you will find five sections (math updates, reading/writing updates, science/social studies updates, friendly reminders, and upcoming dates). If you have any questions or concerns, please send us an email.
Math Updates This week in math we started our unit on volume of solid figures. Students learned how to solve for the volume of a single figure and of a composite or combined figure. We worked to uncover the formula to solve volume (Volume = length x width x height) and how to apply that to both single and composite figures. We took a volume quiz today which will be returned next week. If your student wishes to make quiz corrections they may earn up to half the points back that they lost on each question. Quiz corrections must be made on a separate piece of paper and not on the original quiz. Students were shown how to do this with their previous multiplication quiz. We will continue our work with volume next week and look at proportional relationships, new types of standard units, connecting liquid volume with solid figures, and modeling with real world objects. Please continue to practice with multiplication flashcards if necessary for your student. In addition, many students are not finishing their classwork and/or parents are asking for their student to bring their math notebook (Bansho book) home to complete unfinished work. I am starting something new called “agenda time” during the last five minutes of class. During this time, students whose parents have asked them to bring work home or to bring their journal home would write in their agendas. If you are interested in keeping up regularly with their journal, please ask them to bring their journal home Thursday. Please tell them at home that you want them to participate in “agenda time.” If a journal is taken out of the classroom, it must be returned the following day (Friday) as they are used daily for classwork. Reading/Writing Updates This week in reading we continued to learn about text features. We focused specifically on text features in expository nonfiction articles. We read “Follow That Ball! Soccer Catching on in the U.S.” and “All Work and No Play: Trends in School Recess” (Center for the Collaborative Classrooms). We worked to analyze the information in bar and circle graphs and make informed statements about data based on the information in those graphs. Next week we will complete our unit on text features. In writing, we finished up revisions of the drafts that we have been developing. We revised to include more interesting words, make strong opening sentences, and incorporate partner feedback. Next week we will begin the process of proofreading and publishing the students’ revised drafts. We also cycled through a week’s worth of word study activities as a whole group. This will help prepare the kids for what is expected of them during small group word work. We learned how to do a sound, pattern, writing, and “blind” sort. We also learned about how to complete a word hunt. Students took their first word study assessment based on this whole group work. This will be returned next week. Science/Social Studies Update This week we finished up our unit on How the World Works. There will be a science test on Monday. Students will also spend time sharing their research on Healing the Planet with each other on Monday and Tuesday. We should be starting our new unit called Sharing the Planet on Wednesday. The lines of inquiry for this unit are:
1. If you are interested in being a volunteer at Peirce, on a Peirce field trip, or any other school function, you must complete the new CPS volunteer process outlined below. We have several field trips coming up, so please get this done as soon as possible! For day trips, potential chaperones simply need to complete the short online Level 2 application process at cpsvolunteers.org 2. Progress Reports went home last week (Friday - October 5). Please review and return the bottom portion signed to your student’s homeroom teacher if you have not already done so. Please check Parent Portal on a regular basis to keep up with your student’s grade. If you have questions about specific assignments or grades please reach out to the teacher who teaches that class and not your student’s homeroom teacher. 3. Peirce’s school attendance goal is 97%. Please ensure your child is at school and on time everyday. Upcoming Dates - 17 October: Camp Out and Read Family Literacy Night 29 October: Room 323 Bird Watching Field Trip 30 October: Room 325 Bird Watching Field Trip 31 October: Room 324 Bird Watching Field Trip 31 October: Halloween Parade Bienvenido a nuestro boletín de noticias semanal!
323: Claire Bryant 324: Lydia Gilbert 325: Ines Gonzalez Valenzuela Welcome to our weekly newsletter update!Below you will find five sections (math updates, reading/writing updates, science/social studies updates, friendly reminders, and upcoming dates). If you have any questions or concerns, please send us an email. Math Updates This week in math we took our multiplication quiz on Monday. Students were able to work with a peer buddy to make test corrections as well. Test corrections allowed students to earn half of the lost points back. All tests were returned yesterday and today. Please look over the test with your student and discuss how to improve if needed. This week we also explored volume of cubes and rectangular prisms. We learned the formula for finding volume and that volume is measured in cubic centimeters. We looked at both visual representations of volume and word problems. Next week, we will continue with volume and learn how to find combined volumes of three dimensional figures when they are put together. Reading/Writing Updates This week in reading we launched our unit on text features in expository nonfiction. We read several texts as a class: Solar Energy and “Egyptian Burials”. Students were assigned new reading partners with which they will work for the remainder of the unit. They worked with these partners to “think, pair, write” about the text features they identified. They discussed how each feature helps us understand the text better as readers. We finished the week by applying this same analysis in a reading journal entry to a “good fit” book of the student’s choice. Next week, we will continue our work with text features. In writing we worked to get ideas for nonfiction writing from examples of non-book writing. Students drafted advertisements, recipes, brochures, and other forms of non-book writing. We learned the pre-writing technique of making lists to generate ideas for writing as well. We also moved on from the getting ideas/drafting phase of the writing process. Each student selected one of their drafts which they will revise, proofread and ultimately publish .These finalized works will become a part of the classroom library. Next week we will continue to revise drafts and begin the process of proofreading. We will take the beginning of the year REACH assessment on Wednesday, October 10. This test is used to measure students’ academic growth from the beginning of the year to the end. Please me sure your child is in attendance. Science/Social Studies Updates The Student's Conservation Association's Urban Tree House educator visited our science classroom this week. This organization provides free and memorable environmental education programming to Chicago-area students during the school year. The Urban Tree House programs are meant to guide urban youth of all backgrounds to understand ecological concepts, become aware of how the environment relates to their lives, and get involved in conservation projects that improve the well being of the whole community. The topic covered during this visit was "Water is Life". This covered the water cycle an the importance of water resources. Students played The Water Cycle Game: In this activity, students pretended to be water molecules moving through the atmosphere. Students went to 9 stations (plants, animals, clouds, soil, glaciers, groundwater, oceans, lakes, and rivers). They rolled the water cycle dice at each station, which instructed them whether to stay and collect water at that station or to move to a different one. Students learned how water moves through the atmosphere and that the water cycle is never-ending.
