Bienvenido a nuestra primera boletín informativo. Vaughn

Welcome Back 5th Grade Families! Welcome to our first newsletter update. You can find this on the Peirce website as well: https://peirce5thgrade.weebly.com/. We had a terrific first week of school filled with community building, routines/procedures, and core instruction. Below you will find five sections (math updates, reading/writing updates, science/social studies updates, friendly reminders, and upcoming dates). If you have any questions or concerns, please send us an email.
Math Updates - We began this week by building our norms for group work and putting those norms to practice through several group activities. The activities helped students build a “mathematical mindset” that we will leverage throughout the year. We had several conversations about different math strategies one can try when working on a problem, that speed is not important, and that brains grow and change. We will begin our first math unit next week on place value, multiplication (3 digit by 2 digit), and learning what Japanese Sansu math looks and feels like in fifth grade. Students will not receive daily homework in math. If there are specific math concepts you want extra practice or extension for, please reach out to me. You can also find some ideas under the “math” tab on the grade level website. Reading/Writing Updates - We began this week by getting to know one another as readers and writers. For reading, we worked to practice classroom routines and we learned three different ways to read a book, how to choose a book at the right level, and a few self-monitoring strategies. Scholars had the opportunity to “shop” for books for their book bins and to begin building stamina for reading independently. We will begin our first reading unit, “The Reading Community,” next week. During writing time, scholars reflected on what they have written in the past and the types of writing they would like to do more of during the year. They completed a beginning of the year writing sample which will become part of their portfolio. We will begin our first writing unit, “The Writing Community,” next week. Social Studies/Science Updates - 1st week in pictures - Team building in Science are posted here: Science activities were based on team building and problem solving strategies this week. Next week we will start Earth Science lessons to support our “How the World Works” PYP unit. Social studies activities were based on “Healing the Planet” which will be our focus for the upcoming PYP unit mentioned above. We will be making a claim about how to heal the planet and will be supporting hat claim with evidence and reasoning. Our Lines of Inquiry for this unit are as follows: 1. Earth’s systems - hydrosphere, geosphere, atmosphere, biosphere 2. The sun’s impact on the Earth 3. The effects of humans on Earth’s environment Please check my website often for more information http://peirceroom324.weebly.com/ http://peirceroom324.weebly.com/photos.html Friendly Reminders 1. At this time, students are carrying their backpacks with them to each class. They will leave their lunches and coats in their homeroom. Please ensure that your student’s backpack is organized without additional distractions. 2. Many forms went home on the first day of school. Please return all forms completed to the best of your knowledge and signed as soon as possible. 3. Students are allowed to have a water bottle with them at all times. Students are not allowed to eat snacks or chew gum throughout the day. Please ensure that no snacks are in your student’s backpack. 4. If you are interested in being a volunteer at Peirce, on a Peirce field trip, or any other school function, you must complete the new CPS volunteer process outlined below. We have several field trips coming up, so please get this done as soon as possible! For day trips, potential chaperones simply need to complete the short online Level 2 application process at cpsvolunteers.org. 5. If any parent is free to volunteer and already has level 1 volunteer status, Ms. Vaughn would like help leveling her library during prep from 1:55 - 2:55 on Thursdays and Fridays. Upcoming Dates - Our first field trips are as follows: October 29th Room 323 October 30th Room 325 October 31st Room 324 *Volunteer chaperones must be cleared one month ahead. Please apply using the above link as soon as possible.* Yours In Education, Mrs. Berenson White, Ms. Leventis, and Ms. Vaughn |
