We want to take this time to thank you so much for thinking of us during this holiday season. Your thoughtfulness and generosity is so very much appreciated! We are truly blessed with wonderful students and families this year. We are so very thankful that we have a great class with such special, loving, and supportive parents. We hope that you enjoy your Winter Break and have a wonderful holiday and restful vacation. We will see you all next year! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
Mrs. Leventis & Ms. Vaughn Math Updates This week we finished our study of division with whole numbers. The students took their final test and they can make corrections to receive half their points back if they scored lower than 70. We spent the latter half of the week having some math fun like solving puzzle problems about Aunt Tuka and the Tukatoome Tile, Hidden Beads in a Cloud, and lots of math during our science labs. Science Updates We completed our Bouncing Balls Lab on Monday and spent the rest of the week making and experimenting with Rotor Motors. This lab continued our work with gravity but also introduced the concept of ‘lift’. Students made four different rotor motors and graphed their results. We ended the week with analyzing the Rotor Motor experiment by making a claim and then supporting the claim with evidence and reasoning. A few weeks ago students were given a Super Savers kit to take home. Over the break students should experiment with this kit. The activities that students should complete are listed in google classroom. If for some reason you cannot install any of the devices that your child was given, just write a note on that page of the workbook so that your child can be excused from that activity. Have fun with the kits! ELA & Social Studies Updates This week in reading and social studies students worked to explore additional moments in history when children have gone on strike to push for change in their working and living conditions. Students worked in small groups. They started by taking a “text feature walk” through their assigned chapter of Kids on Strike to see what they noticed and generate questions to guide their reading. With those questions in mind, they read and took notes on their chapter. They used the information they found to help them develop a presentation to teach the rest of the class about their chapter. All groups presented today. In writing, we explored the elements of a 5 paragraph persuasive essay. Students discussed the importance of each section. We then used their boxes and bullets (a way or organizing their opinion and reasons) from the previous week to develop strong body paragraphs for the essays. When we return from break, we will explore opening and closing paragraphs and publish the essay. Friendly Reminders and Announcements
